Two distance-regular graphs
We construct two families of distance-regular graphs, namely the subgraph of
the dual polar graph of type B_3(q) induced on the vertices far from a fixed
point, and the subgraph of the dual polar graph of type D_4(q) induced on the
vertices far from a fixed edge. The latter is the extended bipartite double of
the former

An outline of polar spaces: basics and advances
This paper is an extended version of a series of lectures on polar spaces
given during the workshop and conference 'Groups and Geometries', held at the
Indian Statistical Institute in Bangalore in December 2012. The aim of this
paper is to give an overview of the theory of polar spaces focusing on some
research topics related to polar spaces. We survey the fundamental results
about polar spaces starting from classical polar spaces. Then we introduce and
report on the state of the art on the following research topics: polar spaces
of infinite rank, embedding polar spaces in groups and projective embeddings of
dual polar spaces
Strong Phases and Factorization for Color Suppressed Decays
We prove a factorization theorem in QCD for the color suppressed decays B0->
D0 M0 and B0-> D*0 M0 where M is a light meson. Both the color-suppressed and
W-exchange/annihilation amplitudes contribute at lowest order in LambdaQCD/Q
where Q={mb, mc, Epi}, so no power suppression of annihilation contributions is
found. A new mechanism is given for generating non-perturbative strong phases
in the factorization framework. Model independent predictions that follow from
our results include the equality of the B0 -> D0 M0 and B0 -> D*0 M0 rates, and
equality of non-perturbative strong phases between isospin amplitudes,
delta(DM) = delta(D*M). Relations between amplitudes and phases for M=pi,rho
are also derived. These results do not follow from large Nc factorization with
heavy quark symmetry.Comment: 38 pages, 6 figs, typos correcte
Seeing the forest and the trees: a radio investigation of the ULIRG Mrk 273
Galaxy mergers have been observed to trigger nuclear activity by feeding gas to the central supermassive black hole. One such class of objects are Ultra Luminous InfraRed Galaxies (ULIRGs), which are mostly late stage major mergers of gas-rich galaxies. Recently, large-scale (∼100 kpc) radio continuum emission has been detected in a select number of ULIRGs, all of which also harbour powerful Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). This hints at the presence of large-scale radio emission being evidence for nuclear activity. Exploring the origin of this radio emission and its link to nuclear activity requires high sensitivity multi-frequency data. We present such an analysis of the ULIRG Mrk 273. Using the International LOFAR telescope (ILT), we detected spectacular large-scale arcs in this system. This detection includes, for the first time, a giant ∼190 kpc arc in the north. We propose these arcs are fuelled by a low power radio AGN triggered by the merger. We also identified a bright ∼45 kpc radio ridge, which is likely related to the ionised gas nebula in that region. We combined this with high sensitivity data from APERture Tile In Focus (Apertif) and archival data from the Very Large Array (VLA) to explore the spectral properties. The ILT simultaneously allowed us to probe the nucleus at a resolution of ∼0.3″, where we detected three components, and, for the first time, diffuse emission around these components. Combining this with archival high frequency VLA images of the nucleus allowed us to detect absorption in one component, and a steep spectrum radio AGN in another. We then extrapolate from this case study to the importance of investigating the presence of radio emission in more ULIRGs and what it can tell us about the link between mergers and the presence of radio activity
Boolean like algebras
Using Vaggione’s concept of central element in a double pointed algebra, we introduce the notion of Boolean like variety as a generalization of Boolean algebras to an arbitrary similarity type. Appropriately relaxing the requirement that every element be central in any member of the variety, we obtain the more general class of semi-Boolean like varieties, which still retain many of the pleasing properties of Boolean algebras. We prove
that a double pointed variety is discriminator i↵ it is semi-Boolean like, idempotent, and 0-regular. This theorem yields a new Maltsev-style characterization of double pointed discriminator varieties. Moreover, we show that every idempotent semi-Boolean-like variety is term equivalent to a variety of noncommutative Boolean algebras with additional regular operations
Identification and Validation of the Predictive Capacity of Risk Factors and Models in Liver Transplantation Over Time
Background. Outcome after liver transplantation (LT) is determined by donor, transplant and recipient risk factors. These factors may have different impact on either patient or graft survival (outcome type). In the literature, there is wide variation in the use of outcome types and points in time (short term or long term). Objective of this study is to analyze the predictive capacity of risk factors and risk models in LT and how they vary over time and per outcome type. Methods. All LTs performed in the Netherlands from
January 1, 2002, to December 31, 2011, were analyzed with multivariate analyses at 3-month, 1-year, and 5-year for patient and (non-)death-censored graft survival. The predictive capacity of the investigated risk models was compared with concordance indices.
Results. Recipient age, model for end-stage liver disease sodium, ventilatory support, diabetes mellitus, hepatocellular carcinoma, previous malignancy, hepatitis C virus antibody, hepatitis B virus antibody, perfusion fluid, and Eurotransplant donor risk index (ET-DRI) had significant impact on outcome (graft or patient survival) at 1 or multiple points in time. Significant factors at 3-month patient survival (recipient age, model for end-stage liver disease sodium, ventilato
